Binance estimates $6.3B impact in security incident
Binance estimates a security incident affected about $6.3 billion, with roughly $3 billion frozen on-chain; withdrawals remain paused during security checks.

As crypto exchanges hold assets across connected services and blockchains, a security incident can reach beyond a single wallet. Binance says it is investigating an incident with an estimated impact of about $6.3 billion, and its initial investigation points to a possible compromise of a DevOps engineer’s laptop.
The scale of the estimate and the pause on withdrawals put the exchange’s response and recovery of affected assets under scrutiny.
In its security incident update, Binance said the laptop may have allowed an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The exchange said it had found no evidence of a wallet private key leak, and described the impact figure as an estimate while its investigation continues.
What does Binance say may have enabled the withdrawals?
Binance’s initial account centers on access to a service container, rather than a confirmed leak of wallet keys. The company said the suspected entry point was a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, but presented that as a preliminary finding. It has not yet published a technical post-mortem or confirmed the full attack path.
The distinction matters because the exchange has not described the incident as a private-key compromise. Binance said an attacker used access to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions; the available account does not specify which assets or networks made up the estimated impact. The exchange said it would publish detailed technical findings after the investigation is complete and the facts are verified.
How much has been frozen, and what services are paused?
Binance said it had worked with blockchain partners to freeze about $3 billion in affected assets on-chain. That is the verified amount it reported in its update, against an estimated total impact of about $6.3 billion. The exchange said it had engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds.
As an immediate precaution, Binance said it revoked the affected address authorisation and temporarily paused withdrawals while security checks are completed. A later Binance service update said deposits remain unaffected and withdrawals remain paused during a security revamp of the withdrawal service and related addresses.
How does Binance say it will cover losses?
The exchange said it will cover all losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU, and company funds. It also said user funds are safe and that it will publish an updated Proof of Reserves after remediation is complete. Those commitments address how Binance says it will handle losses; they do not settle the final impact or the incident’s technical cause, which remain subject to its investigation.
