Coinbase adds RLUSD across retail, Exchange and Prime
Coinbase has added Ripple’s RLUSD to its app, Exchange and Prime, with transfers on three networks and 1:1 conversion, widening access for retail and institutional clients.
The ChainBrief Editors
Ripple launched its RLUSD stablecoin in December 2024; on October 28, Coinbase made it available to retail and institutional clients across its app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime. The companies said in their joint announcement that supported customers can trade and manage RLUSD on those platforms.
The listing connects RLUSD to Coinbase’s retail and institutional trading services while letting customers move the token across three blockchain networks.
Coinbase said customers in supported regions can deposit and withdraw RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, Base and Ethereum. The launch also supports conversion of U.S. dollars and other supported USD-denominated stablecoins into RLUSD at a 1:1 rate, according to Ripple. Coinbase’s announcement specified conversion from U.S. dollars at that rate.
Which Coinbase services and networks support RLUSD?
RLUSD is available through the Coinbase retail app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime, according to Coinbase’s announcement. Coinbase Prime serves institutional clients, while Coinbase Exchange is the company’s trading venue; the new availability puts the stablecoin across retail and institutional products. Transfers are supported on XRPL, Base and Ethereum.
The companies said availability for Coinbase Global Exchange customers will follow. They also said those customers are expected to be able to use RLUSD as collateral, but did not give a date for that support. On Base, Ripple will provide liquidity to support RLUSD use on the network.
What does the rollout add for RLUSD?
Ripple said the listing extends RLUSD across spot trading and institutional prime brokerage, and broadens its distribution across Coinbase’s services. The company reported that RLUSD’s market capitalization had exceeded $2.4 billion since its launch in December 2024. That figure is Ripple’s reported measure; Coinbase did not state a market-cap figure in its announcement.
Ripple describes RLUSD as redeemable for U.S. dollars and backed by reserves that include U.S. dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasuries and other cash equivalents. The new Coinbase access gives eligible customers ways to trade, manage and transfer the token through Coinbase’s supported services and networks. For institutions, Prime access places RLUSD alongside execution, settlement and custody services available through the platform, according to the companies.
