MetaMask adds Stellar as a default network

MetaMask has expanded its multichain wallet beyond Ethereum-based networks, making Stellar a default network in MetaMask Mobile and Extension from October 29. The Stellar Development Foundation’s announcement says the integration is live and each MetaMask account now includes a Stellar address.

Adding the network at the account level gives MetaMask users a direct route to Stellar assets and payment applications without first setting up a separate wallet.

How does MetaMask create a Stellar account?

The Stellar address is derived from the recovery phrase already used by the MetaMask account, according to the foundation. Existing Stellar users can also import a recovery phrase from another wallet. The address appears in the user’s multichain account, while new users can access Stellar after downloading MetaMask.

That makes Stellar available within the same wallet interface as other supported networks. MetaMask says users can hold and manage XLM, trustline assets and Soroban tokens, send and receive them, and swap between Stellar and other supported networks.

What does the integration let users do?

The addition connects MetaMask’s existing account and transaction flows to Stellar’s network. According to the foundation, users can transact directly on Stellar through the mobile app or browser extension. MetaMask’s Stellar support guide says users can move assets onto the network through its swap feature, by buying XLM where available, from a centralized exchange, or with a transfer.

Some Stellar assets require an additional on-chain step: a trustline, which lets an account receive and hold a specific token. MetaMask’s guide says each trustline locks 0.5 XLM in reserve. A new Stellar address also needs to receive at least 1 XLM before it is activated on the network. For a cross-chain swap into a non-XLM asset, the user must establish the trustline before the funds arrive; MetaMask says its interface prompts users to do so.

Why is Stellar being added to MetaMask’s Open Money plan?

MetaMask describes the integration as part of its Open Money strategy, which aims to support holding, sending, spending and trading both crypto and traditional forms of money in one account. Stellar, a public payments network launched in 2014, is designed for transfers across currencies and assets.

The foundation reported that Stellar processed $55.6 billion in payment volume in 2025, up 52% from the previous year, across remittances, commerce and public-sector payment rails. Those figures come from the foundation’s announcement. MetaMask Chief Product Officer Gal Eldar said the integration would let users transact on Stellar directly, while Stellar Development Foundation CEO Denelle Dixon said it brings the network into a wallet users already use.
