Aztec Tierra V6 fixes critical flaw and speeds private proofs

Aztec’s privacy-focused Ethereum Layer 2 runs programmable private smart contracts across a network the project says has more than 3,000 validators. On 3 November, the Aztec Foundation announced Tierra, the network’s Alpha V6 upgrade, saying it fixes vulnerabilities in earlier versions and speeds up private transactions.

The release addresses a critical V5 proving-system flaw that Aztec says could expose funds and applications to protocol-level failure.

In its Tierra launch announcement, Aztec said the upgrade adds formal verification of core cryptographic components and an AI-powered security testing harness. The project also said private transactions can now generate client-side proofs in about one second on a native device, roughly twice as fast as on the previous network.

What did Tierra fix in the V5 proving system?

Aztec’s network status page says contributors disclosed a critical vulnerability in V5’s proving system on 7 August and that Tierra V6 resolves it. The project’s status guidance says funds and applications on V5 should be treated as exposed to a protocol-level failure, and directs users to migrate to V6.

The vulnerability concerned the proving system, which processes proofs used to validate private transactions. Aztec has not published detailed technical findings in its launch announcement. The status page identifies Tierra as version 6.0.0 on the Alpha network and says the V5 security incidents are resolved, with no incidents reported for V6.

How does the upgrade change Ethereum-to-Aztec messaging?

Aztec says a new architecture reduces Ethereum-to-Aztec message delivery from an average of two minutes to as little as 12 seconds. That change affects deposits and other cross-chain interactions, alongside the faster local proof generation.

The two performance figures describe separate steps: proof generation happens on a user’s device, while message delivery carries information from Ethereum to Aztec. The launch announcement does not give further technical details about the architecture or specify conditions for reaching the 12-second minimum.

Which private apps are launching with the upgrade?

Aztec lists payment, trading, AI and social applications as launching or preparing deployments alongside Tierra. The announcement highlights zk.money, built by Aztec Labs for private payments and savings, and Nyx, which offers private payments to Ethereum wallets.

Other projects named by Aztec include Galactica for private AI inference, Nemi for private perpetuals trading, Nulo as a browser wallet, Xochi for private intents and trading, Olla for AZTEC liquid staking, and Rolling Chat, a private message board. Aztec says users can deposit into zk.money directly from an Ethereum wallet, using the upgrade’s faster messaging.
